Canadians think they're the healthiest
The marketing firm Mintel released a survey in July saying three in five Canadians believe they lead a healthy lifestyle when in reality an estimated 63% finds the time to exercise weekly while the others exercise on a daily basis as well as having a balance diet.
Mintel lifestyle analyst Jason Praw says a new retail opportunity can be derived from the majority of Canadians who rely on athletic equipment and apparel in aid of a healthy lifestyle.
"As the majority of Canadians already believe they are healthy and lead relatively active lifestyle, marketers and sports related organizations could nurture this further with new, fun and unique fitness activities and programs." says Prawn. "Other key targets should be younger Canadians, and males in particular, who are less likely to categorize themselves as ‘healthy’. The key is to present them with products and programs that appeal to their differing sensibilities. One possible solution can be the promotion of the gamification of fitness; utilizing gaming systems like Xbox or PlayStation to increase the activity levels of this target audience.”
The study also finds that 76% of Canadians acknowledge they eat homemade meals as well as fruits and vegetables on a weekly basis; while the highest average is among women followed by youths and young adults up to age 24 years and lastly older adults over 65. It was also revealed that Chinese Canadians think they are the healthiest.Mintel
