Government and Community Service Fair

The ninth annual Government and Community Service Fair kicks off at the Cloverdale Mall with over a hundred exhibitors and  more than two hundred people in attendance.

The purpose of the event was to create awareness among the Constituency organizers, community organizations, and families.

“We have one hundred and twenty different organizations from community to not - for- profits, to some that are government funded to actually ministries that are here advertising their services and just bringing them closer to what’s available,” said Adam Feldman, Constituency Assistant.

“In the riding of Etobicoke Lakeshore, and all the services that the local MP Peter Milczyn would have a great interest in. His office here with the office of Etobicoke Centre has put together this event that’s helpful for the community,” Feldman said.

MPP Peter Milczyn said, “We are very lucky in Etobicoke, there are a lot of community services, there are a lot of different supports for seniors, people with children with disabilities, there are a lot of investments in new programs that the government is implementing.”

“It’s all about getting the information out making people aware and being accessible and being able to make the link,”  said Milczyn.

Milczyn states he is prepared to answer questions or listen to any comments from anyone who wants to talk.

Some of the community service providers that were on hand were pleased with the day’s event and to share valid information.

Administrative Assistant Susan Junco of Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) said. “A lot of people think we are a travel agency but when we tell them about it they go oh good to know.”

“We explain TICO it’s a regulated, that there is specific legislation on how travel services are sold here in Ontario, they didn’t even know there are certain protection laws”.

Social Service Worker Valarie Heath said, “Today was very insightful and informative, I hope to volunteer with the Community Social Service program.”

Pan Am Games and Para Pan Am Games

Today community leaders, athletes and organizers all gathered to witness the keys for the athlete village been handed over for the 2015 Pam Am Games and Para Pan Am Games. The CIBC Pan Am Games will be the largest game ever in Canada, with over six thousand athletes from forty one countries expected to be in attendance, the excitement is starting to build around the city. With construction on the athlete’s village now completed the count down begins because the games are only five months away.

Caribbean Carnival Heats up Toronto

The annual Caribbean Carnival kicks off along the Lake Shore in Toronto with the sweet sounds of steel bands and colourful array of costumes that paved the way along the three-and-a -half  kilometer route.

The festival is in its 47^th year and is the largest in North America; it drew an estimated one million people of all ages from all over the world.

Sherie-Ann Golding is a Jamaican on her first visit to Toronto and has never seen anything like this she said she has no regrets.

 “It was interesting to see the different types of genre of costumes and music that kept floating by, I wish I was on one of the floats.” she said. “I would do it again it was fun and exciting, it’s worth my time I will be back again next year.”

Latisha Hall lives in Toronto and attends the parade each year she says it’s a special time of year for her to celebrate music.

“The music, alone just keep me going, I’m soaking it up because this I our Soca time” she says “it’s good to see everybody out just dancing to Soca”

The parade causes major road closures in different areas of the city to allow for a smooth transition of the event.  
Starting at the Exhibition Place going along Park Side, the sounds of the Caribbean filled the air while revelers who were clad in elaborate costumes of  feather, sequins, and glitters danced to the rhythmic Soca and Calypso music.
